IN FLAMES drop surprise covers EP ‘Down, Wicked & No Good’ today & kick off UK/EU tour!

Gothenburg-based metal heavyweights IN FLAMES surprise fans with a four-track covers EP ‘Down, Wicked & No Good’ out today on streaming platforms worldwide! The band shared the news during their SOLD OUT hometown show at the Ericsson Globe in Stockholm, Sweden.

Get your download here:

To debut their cover of DEPECHE MODE’s 1997 hit single 'It’s No Good', IN FLAMES are taking over DEPECHE MODE’s Facebook page today starting at 12:00 GMT, releasing exclusive content and a new video for the song -
watch it here:

The panoptic covers collection also includes IN FLAMES' versions of ALICE IN CHAINS’ 'Down In A Hole,' CHRIS ISAAK’s 'Wicked Game,' and a live bonus version of NINE INCH NAILS' 'Hurt'. It sees the Swedish quintet expanding beyond metal to incorporate the group’s varied musical taste and expansive sonic range.

“We’ve been fans of DEPECHE MODE since we were as young as 10. Getting to do our rendition of ‘It’s No Good’ showed us a different side of the song – it brought new meanings to us. We relate to the lyrics and power of the song so heavily that it almost feels as if we could have written it ourselves. They’re a band that we’ve always looked up to. Growing up, you either listened to Pop, Synths or Rock and even though we are a metal band, Depeche Mode inspired a lot of the electronic elements we use in our music today.”

Earlier this week, the Swedish icons IN FLAMES kicked off their co-headline arena tour with American heavyweights, FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH and special guests OF MICE & MEN in Helsinki. The trek will ravage arenas across Europe and the UK, stopping in most major cities, finally concluding on December 21st at the iconic Wembley Arena in London, UK.

AT THE GATES begin new album recordings; announce more live shows for 2018

Swedish melodic Death Metal pioneers AT THE GATES have begun recordings of their upcoming studio album with producer Russ Russell (Napalm Death, The Haunted, Dimmu Borgir, etc.) at Parlour Studios in the UK, which follows up 2014’s acclaimed comeback release “At War With Reality”. The band has checked in with the following comment:

"We are finally hitting the studio and are super excited about this! The songs have been worked on in such detail for the last 7 months and we can´t wait to put them down to tape. Russ Russell was actually the runner up for mixing “At War With Reality”, and we really wanted to work with him on this one. He has what we are looking for when it comes to sheer loud, blunt heaviness. This is going to be a darker, richer and more raging album than the last one. It has so much more real ATG emotions on display, and I would say, it has the same approach lyrically as the feeling of “The Red In The Sky Is Ours”. More of a RED album, than a BLUE one. Can´t wait for people to hear it!" -- Tomas / AT THE GATES – Gothenburg, November 2017

Check out a first video report from the studio, featuring AT THE GATES drummer Adrian Erlandsson doing a drum set-up run-down for the recordings:

AT THE GATES have also announced their next live shows for 2018 as follows:

AT THE GATES – Live 2018:
04.03.2018 Tilburg (The Netherlands) – Netherlands Deathfest
31.03.2017 Philadelphia (USA) – Decibel Metal & beer Fest
21.06.2018 Halden (Norway) – Tons Of Rock Festival
13.-15.07.2018 Gävle (Sweden) – Gefle Metal Fest
27.-28.07.2018 Essen (Germany) – Nord Open Air
08.-11.08.2018 Jaromer (Czech Republic) – Brutal Assault Festival

Europe - Announce 2018 UK Headline Tour

Europe are pleased to announce they will embark on a headline UK Tour next September 2018 featuring special guests King King. The shows will feature songs from the new album “Walk The Earth” as well as all the hits.

The tour will kick off at Manchester Academy on Friday September 14th 2018 and will continue right across the UK – hitting venues in Glasgow, Newcastle, Nottingham, Birmingham, Cardiff, Portsmouth, Brighton and also London’s iconic venue, The Royal Albert Hall.

Earlier this year Europe released their 11th studio album ‘Walk the Earth’ and if Europe’s 2015 album “War Of Kings” was the album that made the rock world realise what a formidable act Europe had become, then “Walk The Earth” is the album that is set to establish the band as one of the most exciting contemporary rock acts of current times.

From the anthemic sound of the opening track “Walk The Earth” – to the heavy vibe that is “Haze”, from the instant melody of “Election Day” to the lyrical content of “Kingdom United”, “Walk The Earth” is the album that should see Europe rightly acclaimed as a band at the height of their powers. The wonderful melodies and depth of Joey Tempest’s vocals along with a powerhouse rhythm section and the guitar playing of John Norum, one of the great underrated guitarists. Norum’s guitar playing shines across the record. This is an album that is big in its scope and sound. Much like previous album “War Of Kings”, “Walk The Earth” is an album that has instant appeal but is also an album that needs to be lived with, in order to uncover it’s depth. The album was recorded at famed Abbey Road Studios in London with Grammy winning producer Dave Cobb (Rival Sons, Shooter Jennings, Jason Isbell, Chris Stapleton).

Late 2016 saw Europe perform a series of “The Final Countdown Anniversary Shows” across Europe – culminating in a show at The Roundhouse in London. The show has been immortalised in a July 2017 DVD release “The Final Countdown 30th Anniversary Show - Live at the Roundhouse”.

Preceding the landmark event, fans were also treated to a live performance of Europe’s last album, 2015’s War of Kings, a release which re-established Europe as one of the top rock bands in the world.

Since forming in 1979 Europe have sold over 25 million albums, toured across the world and become one of the greats of modern rock music. The band’s all-conquering “The Final Countdown” album has alone sold over 15 million copies worldwide and the single of the same name was No 1 in 25 countries. Europe are currently touring arenas across the UK, appearing as special guests on the Deep Purple Tour.

Iron Maiden announce Legacy Of The Beast European Tour 2018

Following the massively successful global tour of 2016-17 in support of their sixteenth studio album The Book Of Souls IRON MAIDEN will take to the road again in 2018 with a series of arena and festival shows in Europe on the Legacy Of The Beast World Tour opening in Tallinn, Estonia on May 26 and finishing at the O2 Arena, London on August 10.

The UK dates are:

The full European tour schedule can be found on and the tour is expected to continue in 2019.

The concept for the Legacy Of The Beast World Tour was inspired by Maiden’s mobile game and comic book of the same name and the stage set design will feature a number of different but interlocking “worlds” with a set list covering a large selection of Eighties material with a handful of surprises from later albums to add diversity.

Maiden manager Rod Smallwood explains further, “As our fans know, we’ve been following a particular touring cycle ever since Bruce and Adrian re-joined Maiden at the start of the millennium, alternating new album tours with “History/Hits” tours. We enjoy working this way for many reasons, not least because it gives the band a chance to play both new material and the older favourites which we know fans like to hear. It keeps things fresh, not just for the fans but for the band too.

“For this History/Hits tour we decided to base the theme around the Legacy Of The Beast name, which suits our purposes perfectly by giving us scope to get creative and have some fun, especially with Eddie! I don’t want to give too much away at the moment but we’re working on a number of different stage sets, all in keeping with the Maiden tradition and we hope to give our fans a fantastic experience when they come to see this very special show.”

Killswitch Engage [] will be Maiden’s Special Guest on headline European shows from May 26 to July 1 inclusive, and in the UK from July 31 to Aug 10 inclusive. Guests on other shows are currently being finalised and will be announced soon.

Most shows go on sale Friday 24th November, please check for full details. As always, there will be an exclusive presale for Fan Club members, starting Monday 20th.

Atrocity “Masters of Darkness” EP Review

When a band decides to stretch its musical legs, it’s usually met with distain with an almost immediate effect. Yet, years can go by and those artists that laid the path can be revered as pioneers or they can simply be left to rot in the forgotten in a pile of avant-garde musical projects.

Ok, so that may sound a little vague so here’s another question. How many German Metal bands can you name off the top of your head? Who will you come up with? The obvious answers will include Scorpions, Rammstein, Accept or if you like the thrasher options you might go Kreator, Sodom or Destruction.

Yet, do you know of Atrocity? No, well my friend you’ve missed out on what could possibly be one of the most pioneering of all the German metal bands.

How so? Well they’ve hung around since 1985, and their founding member Alexander Krull has done a lot and I mean a lot for the German Metal scene. Essentially, he helped kick start so much of the German underground scene into existence.

Atrocity also pieced together the Gothic and Industrial music into the world of Metal, of course bands in particular like Cradle of Filth and Rammstein have used to great advantage over the years.

Anyway, I digress. Atrocity is for the most part a Death Metal band. That is after all where the story began all those years ago. In 2013, Atrocity returned to their roots with the fantastically heavy “Okkult”, and will soon bring forth unto the world, “Okkult” Part 2. Yet that’s not the reason for this review, Alex and co felt it necessary to wet our appetite with an EP lovingly entitled “Masters of Darkness”.

So with only 4 tracks it’s not exactly going to be taking too long to rattle through. However, if you absolutely want an all out metal assault then “Masters of Darkness” is definitely a great EP to pick up, and works especially well as a perfect introduction to Atrocity.

Taking this EP as a prelude to next year’s “Okkult 2” album, “Masters of Darkness” hits you straight out of the gate with the title track, and it blasts in with relentless Death Metal.

Rapid fire drumming and aggressively intense riffs lay down what’s to come for the rest of the EP with Alex putting down some forcefully commanding vocals to complete the package. Not only that but Atrocity like to explore particular themes within the lyrics and the EP conjures up images of the occult and its importance in world history especially within the darker recesses of the human condition.

Atrocity was one of the pioneers when it came to using German lyrics within their songs before those younglings in Rammstein did so to great effect. The song in question on the EP is “Menschenschlachthaus”. The song opens with a deluge of cannon fire before ripping back into brutal Death Metal, there’s definitely no mucking about from Atrocity on this EP and rarely does the EP deviate from that path.

On to “Gates To Oblivion”, the song opens with the distinct flavouring of a Gothic inspired choir. Although, there is very little of this throughout the EP, there are small parts of Atrocity’s many faces. This addition of the choir really helps add extra variety to the songs and extra level of attention rather than constant relentless destructive death metal.

Overall, the EP is indeed short yes, yet within it holds so much of what Atrocity stands for. Blasting Death Metal, aggressive tones and vocals that smash through the speakers like a jet engine. Its lyrical content is a point of interest for the listener, which allows you to discover something new albeit it dark about human history. Metal music does appear to love giving listeners a dive into human history. The EP also contains flavours of where Atrocity has been in the past, which are the spicy additions of a choir on certain songs.

9/10 – A superb gateway into Atrocity. Full on blasting Death Metal with smatterings of Gothic interest. Atrocity to a T! If this what “Okkult 2” sounds like, sign me up!

Atrocity Interview

1. Hi guys, how are you today? Where are you chatting to me from in Germany?

2. So looking back a little, “Die Gottlosen Jahre” chronicled the bands 25th Anniversary and looked back at all you’ve done in the industry. That was released in 2012, so you what does the band have in store for its 30th Birthday?

3. Looking back once more, your last album “Okkult”. How did you feel the reactions to the album were and to the tours that you went on?

4. So you’ve gone back to Massacre Records that you spent a large portion of the 90’s on. What was the reason behind the switch from Napalm Records to Massacre?

5. I love the EP “Masters of Darkness”, it’s very much keeping in line with “Okkult”. What was the reason behind an EP and not just bringing out “Okkult” Part 2?

6. So any fan of Atrocity should have seen just how varied your influences and musical direction has been over the years. What are your influences/inspirations when writing currently?

7. Also how did you come by the artwork for “Masters of Darkness”?

8. Speaking of “Okkult” 2, what has been done so far on the album?

9. What are Atrocity’s plans for 2018? I do hope a UK Tour

10. Finally, what do you enjoy outside of the band? What are some of your hobbies?

Cradle of Filth & Savage Messiah Electric Ballroom 10/11/2017

Savage Messiah - Photo Credit: Nathan Kerridge-Porter

A bitterly cold night approaches in London, and the hordes of filthy individuals have assembled for tonight’s festive musical numbers from Cradle of Filth and thrashers Savage Messiah.

Now the Electric Ballroom despite it being a sound Friday evening also plays host to a nightclub that unfortunately starts tonight’s musical extravaganza off quite early.

Savage Messiah (6) is tonight’s home town heroes and is here in full voice. They are loud, proud and thrashingly entertaining, however despite their hard earned efforts they didn’t really have an impact on the crowd. That being said maybe the crowd are just not into the hometown thrashers and certainly looking out onto the nearly full Ballroom, it’s hard to spot too many Savage Messiah t-shirts over the gothic inspired black glad ladies and gentleman that predominately cover the mass area of Camden’s Electric Ballroom.

Cradle of Filth - Photo credit: Nathan Kerridge-Porter

Ah Cradle of Filth (9), a marmite band of the Metal world. Love them or hate them, they’ve been around a damn long time and are still a force in their own right.

On tonight’s showing they’ve lost none of their theatricality, bringing on ankle grinders shooting metallic shaves into the stratosphere of the venues lighting structures, boy it looks dangerous but oh so appealing.

Theatrics aside, Cradle have had a massive back catalogue and have garnered up a massive list of fan favourites that are all on show tonight. From the set opener and lovingly titled `Gilded Cunt` through to the highlights of `Nymphetamine` and `Her Ghost In the Fog` go down an absolute treat producing Disney esq sing-along moments albeit with extra shrieking.

The maestro of the Filth, or to some Dani, his voice is still an absolute fucking beast. His ability to hit the majority of the high notes on tracks plus his control of his vocal chords is still an amazing feat and his talent should never go unrecognised or unrewarded.

Cradle of Filth have in more recent times unfortunately slipped through the pecking order in the world of metal, however their staying power and influence can never be discounted.

Cradle of Filth - Photo Credit: Nathan Kerridge-Porter

Overall, an odd pairing that despite the metal that links the bands and probably both bands share similar influences, yet are vastly different. Whereas Cradle have carved their own path from their earliest inception for over 20+ years and were lucky enough to have existed in a time of little competition, compared to Savage Messiah who just didn’t fit with tonight’s headliners and needed more either theatricality or gothic metal sensibility.

Commented Phil Campbell:
"I am really excited for the fans to hear our debut record. Every part of the process was done in Wales, from the writing, to the recording and even the artwork! The album title ‘The Age Of Absurdity’ was inspired by the crazy world we live in today. The world to me seems to be a bit of a theater show so the album artwork idea just seemed to fit so well with the whole concept and album title."

Added singer Neil Starr:
"Writing and recording this album was a lot of fun. We got to record at Rockfield studios where so many great artists had been over the years, it really was inspirational. Hearing the blistering riffs that the Campbell family seem to churn out effortlessly made me ensure I pushed myself to the limits when writing the melodies and lyrics. It's an album that I, and the rest of the band, are very proud of and can't wait to share it with the world!"

On the road since April 2016 and over 100 shows later, the resurgent Guns N’ Roses are back and coming to Download Festival. Reuniting last year for the first time since 1993, the inimitable Axl Rose, guitar legend Slash and original bassist Duff McKagan, plus Dizzy Reed, Richard Fortus, Frank Ferrer andMelissa Reese, have been blowing audiences away worldwide on the aptly named Not In This Lifetime Tour, and will stop by Donington on the Saturday night for their first UK Festival appearance of the classic line up on legendary form after selling 1 million tickets across Europe in 2017 alone.

Following the group’s 1985 formation, Guns N’ Roses injected unbridled, unrivalled, and unstoppable attitude into the burgeoning Los Angeles rock scene. The spirit went on to captivate the entire world with the release of their 1987 debut Appetite for Destruction, the best-selling U.S. debut ever, moving 30 million copies globally. In 1991, the seven-time platinum Use Your Illusion I and Use Your Illusion II occupied the top two spots of the BillboardTop 200 upon release. Over the course of the past decade, Guns N’ Roses have performed sold out shows and headlined festivals worldwide following the critically acclaimed release of 2008’s RIAA platinum-certified Chinese Democracy. Six studio albums later, Guns N’ Roses are one of the most important and influential acts in music history and continue to set the benchmark for live performances connecting with millions of fans across the globe.

Download Festival’s Promoter, Andy Copping said:
“It’s great to have this iconic line up of Guns N’ Roses headlining at Download. I am sure I am not alone when I say I have been wanting this to happen for years. It will be an incredible show and will be one of the highlights of the Download weekend!”

Earlier this week Download Festival revealed that The Prince Of Darkness Ozzy Osbourne will be headlining the Sunday night and one of the world’s biggest rock bands Avenged Sevenfold will be headlining the Friday night. Guns N’ Roses complete the 2018 line up and will headline the Saturday night.

Evanescence “Synthesis” Album review

Despite the fact that Evanescence having been creating music since 1995, it’s strange to think “Synthesis” is only album number 4.

Over the years, Evanescence have a core sound, yet they’ve always brought in a variety of musical sounds that mixes well especially when there’s such a talented vocalist on hand. Evanescence has always remained in flux, toeing the line between the orchestral and the rockers. However, as you’ll notice with “Synthesis” the sound theme is pretty much leaning fully to the orchestral regions of Evanescence’s ethos.

The eagle eyed or eared among you will be thinking “Hey, all those tracks look familiar?” You’d be very much correct; there are only two new tracks on “Synthesis”. The rest are re-workings of older songs, “Your Immortal”, “Bring Me to Life” and “Lithium” all form part of the re-imagining.

Listening to “Bring Me to Life”, which was ultimately the band’s breakout and one of their biggest hits to date and the song is certainly a huge departure tonally from its original source.

Where once upon a time, it was a rip roaring heavy guitar led track with a touch of rap rock thrown in to accompany Amy’s dark operatic vocals. The song now takes on more of a cinematic operatic consideration; although the original had its qualities, this version really allows Amy to show off her powerful vocals and newer vocal techniques.

Certainly one of the strangest tracks that Evanescence have reworked for “Synthesis” is “My Immortal” which if you remember the original was very much a huge piano and string led piece. “My Immortal” already showcased Amy’s ability to not only hit a rock vocal but also her hit a softer vocal range. So really, the reimagining for this track doesn’t need this kind of reworking. Amy’s vocal delivery and inflection has changed however this track is annoyingly little redundant when administrating changes on an orchestral level.

“Imperfection” is one of a few new songs to appear on “Synthesis”. Ultimately however the song showcases the summation of what appears to be Evanescence’s new direction. The direction in particular now revolves around maximising Amy’s spectacular voice, with the backdrop of electronic sounds and the use of strings to create something which gives the song a powerful yet nuanced tone.

Overall, this isn’t really a brand new album. The reworking of classic tracks gives the album more of a special edition feel or as a preview of new albums to expect from Evanescence. Although, they will always keep an element of hard rock here or there, the overall theme appears to be moving over to orchestral and electronic sounds whilst further elevating Amy’s vocals. Do not threat, there’s no threat of Evanescence becoming any sort of EDM dance troupe.

This is definitely more for the Evanescence fan base, it’s not a full blown new album but reworking old tracks with their new direction, which wouldn’t take their fans into shock mode when a full album with all orchestra and electronic have fully eclipsed the Evanescence hard rock elements.1

8/10 – A grand re-working of classic tracks!

Stand out tracks:
“Imperfection”, “Bring Me to Life” and “Lithium”

1. Overture
2. Never Go Back
